What clogged pores are
The earliest stage of acne, and one of the most common reasons clients book a facial at Skin Space.
Every pore holds a hair follicle and an oil gland. When oil and dead skin cells collect inside the pore faster than they can shed, they form a plug. That plug is called a comedone, and it shows up in one of two ways depending on whether the pore stays open or closes over.
Blackheads
Open clogs. The plug is exposed to air at the surface and darkens, so it looks like a black or brown dot. It isn't dirt.
Whiteheads
Closed clogs. Skin covers the plug, so it sits as a small white or skin-colored bump that doesn't come to a head.
Sebaceous filaments
Not clogs at all. These are normal oil-lined pores that look like faint gray dots, usually across the nose, and they refill after cleaning.
Congestion often goes hand in hand with shine and larger-looking pores. See oily skin and enlarged pores. Firm white bumps that never clear may be milia, which are treated differently. See milia and closed comedones.
What causes it
Mostly oil, shedding and what you put on your skin.
Clogged pores come down to two things: too much oil and dead skin cells that stick together instead of shedding. Anything that adds to either one makes congestion more likely.
- Oily skin type, which is largely genetic and most active across the T-zone.
- Hormone shifts that raise oil production, including the teen years, monthly cycles and perimenopause.
- Heavy or pore-clogging products such as rich creams, some sunscreens, foundation, and hair oils that touch the forehead and hairline.
- Skipping exfoliation, or overdoing it. Too little leaves buildup behind; too much irritates skin and can make it produce more oil.
- Sweat, humidity and friction from workouts, masks, hats and phones.
- Sleeping in makeup or not cleansing after the gym or a day at the beach.

What to expect at Skin Space
From your first visit in Massapequa to clearer pores.
Consultation
We look closely at your pores, check whether you're seeing blackheads, whiteheads or sebaceous filaments, and review the products you use.
Your first treatment
Your provider chooses the facial that fits your skin. Most clients see smoother, clearer-looking pores right after the first visit.
A home routine
We recommend a few products to keep pores clear between visits, which is what makes results last.
Maintenance
Pores refill over time, so many clients return to Skin Space about once a month to keep congestion under control.
Keeping pores clear at home
Small daily habits make the biggest difference.
- Cleanse twice a day with a gentle cleanser, and always remove makeup and sunscreen before bed.
- Exfoliate regularly, not aggressively. A leave-on exfoliant such as salicylic acid works inside the pore, where scrubs can't reach. Your provider can suggest how often.
- Choose non-comedogenic products, including moisturizer, sunscreen and foundation, and keep hair oils away from your forehead.
- Don't squeeze or use pore strips. They can irritate skin, break capillaries and leave marks without clearing the clog.
- Plan for Long Island summers. Heat, humidity and beach days mean more sweat and oil, so cleanse after workouts and swimming and switch to a lighter, oil-free sunscreen.
When to see a dermatologist
Most congestion is cosmetic, but not all bumps are clogged pores.
Facials handle everyday congestion well, but see a dermatologist or your doctor if you notice:
- Clogged pores that are turning into deep, painful or scarring breakouts
- A single bump that grows, changes, bleeds or doesn't heal
- Sudden widespread bumps or a rash, especially if it itches or burns
- No improvement after a few months of regular treatment and home care
Prescription treatments and professional facials often work well together. The Skin Space team is glad to coordinate with your dermatologist, and we'll refer you if something needs medical care first.
Common questions
Is a blackhead the same as a sebaceous filament?
No. Blackheads are true clogs that stand out as dark dots, while sebaceous filaments are normal oil-lined pores that look like small gray or tan dots, usually across the nose. Filaments refill within weeks after cleaning, so the aim is to keep them less visible rather than remove them for good. Your Skin Space provider can tell you which you have.
Why are blackheads black if they aren't dirt?
The dark color comes from oil and skin cells that are exposed to air at the open pore and darken, not from dirt. That is why scrubbing harder doesn't help and can make skin more irritated.
Are pore strips or at-home extractions safe?
Pore strips can lift some surface buildup but don't clear the clog inside the pore, and results fade quickly. Squeezing at home can push debris deeper, break capillaries and leave marks. Professional extractions use sterile tools on skin that has been properly prepared.
How often should I get a facial for clogged pores?
Many clients with congested skin do well with a treatment about once a month, which roughly matches the skin's renewal cycle. Your Skin Space provider will suggest a schedule based on how quickly your pores clog and how your skin responds.
Can clogged pores turn into acne?
They can. A clogged pore is the starting point of every acne breakout, and when bacteria and inflammation build up inside it, it can become a red or tender spot. Keeping pores clear is one of the best ways to prevent breakouts.
