What oily skin is
A skin type, not a flaw, and one Skin Space treats every day.
Every pore has an oil gland that makes sebum, the natural oil that keeps skin soft and protected. In oily skin, those glands are larger or more active and produce more oil than the skin needs. The extra oil sits on the surface as shine and mixes with dead skin cells inside the pores, which is why oily skin clogs and breaks out more easily.
Oily skin also has an upside: it tends to feel supple and handles some treatments well. The goal isn't to strip oil away. It's to keep it balanced so skin looks fresh rather than greasy and pores stay clear.
Oily all over
Shine across the whole face, often with visible pores on the cheeks as well as the T-zone.
Combination
An oily forehead, nose and chin with normal or dry cheeks. The most common pattern.
Oily and dehydrated
Shiny by midday but tight or flaky after cleansing, often from harsh products.
Oily skin often goes hand in hand with congestion and breakouts. See blackheads and clogged pores and active and adult acne.
What causes it
Mostly genetics and hormones, with daily habits on top.
How much oil your skin makes is largely inherited, and hormones decide how active those glands are at any point in life. Daily habits and your environment can make shine better or worse.
- Genetics, since oily skin tends to run in families.
- Hormones, especially androgens, which is why oil peaks in the teens and can rise around periods, pregnancy and with some birth control changes.
- Age, with oil production usually easing over time.
- Heat and humidity, which make skin look shinier through the summer.
- Harsh or stripping products that irritate the skin barrier and make oiliness harder to manage.
- Heavy, rich products that add to the oil already on the surface.

What to expect at Skin Space
From your first visit in Massapequa to balanced skin.
Consultation
We look at where your skin gets oily, check for congestion, dehydration or breakouts, and review the products you use.
Your first treatment
Your provider chooses a facial or peel that clears buildup and balances oil. Most clients notice less shine and smoother skin right away.
A home routine
We recommend a short, simple routine of cleanser, lightweight moisturizer, targeted exfoliant and oil-free sunscreen.
Maintenance
Oily skin is ongoing, so many clients return to Skin Space about once a month to keep shine and congestion in check.
Caring for oily skin at home
Balance, not stripping.
- Cleanse twice a day, gently. A foaming or gel cleanser is usually enough. Skip harsh scrubs and alcohol-heavy toners.
- Keep moisturizing with a lightweight, oil-free formula so skin stays comfortable and the barrier stays healthy.
- Use a leave-on exfoliant. Ingredients like salicylic acid work inside the pore to keep oil from building up. Your provider can suggest how often.
- Blot, don't wash, during the day. Blotting papers lift shine without disturbing your skin or makeup.
- Plan for Long Island summers. Heat, humidity and beach days mean more oil, so cleanse after workouts and swimming and switch to a lighter, oil-free sunscreen.
When to see a dermatologist
Oily skin is common, but some changes are worth checking.
Facials handle everyday oiliness well, but see a dermatologist or your doctor if you notice:
- Red, flaky or greasy scaly patches around the nose, eyebrows or hairline, which may be a condition that needs medical treatment
- A sudden increase in oil along with acne, irregular periods or new hair growth on the face or body, which can point to a hormonal cause
- Oiliness that started with a new medication
- Breakouts that are deep, painful or leaving scars
Prescription treatments and professional facials often work well together. The Skin Space team is glad to coordinate with your dermatologist, and we'll refer you if something needs medical care first.
Common questions
Should I still moisturize if my skin is oily?
Yes. Oil and hydration aren't the same thing, and skipping moisturizer can leave oily skin tight, irritated and harder to manage. A lightweight, oil-free moisturizer is usually the right fit.
Can skin be oily and dehydrated at the same time?
Yes, and it's common. Skin can produce plenty of oil while lacking water, especially after harsh cleansers or drying acne products. It often feels tight after washing but looks shiny by midday. Your Skin Space provider can tell which you're dealing with.
Does washing my face more often help oily skin?
Usually not. Twice a day is enough for most people. Washing more often, or with harsh cleansers, can irritate the skin barrier and make oiliness and breakouts harder to control.
Will my skin always be oily?
Oil production is largely set by genetics and hormones, so it tends to be highest in the teens and twenties and often eases with age. Treatment won't change your skin type permanently, but it can keep shine, congestion and breakouts under control.
How often should I get a facial for oily skin?
Many clients with oily skin do well with a facial about once a month, with peels added in a series when needed. Your Skin Space provider will suggest a schedule based on how your skin responds.
