What active acne is

More than the occasional spot, and one of the most common reasons clients visit Skin Space.

Acne forms when pores clog with oil and dead skin cells. Inside a clogged pore, acne bacteria multiply and the skin responds with inflammation, which is what turns a clog into a red, sore breakout.

Active acne means new breakouts keep appearing rather than the odd blemish now and then. It isn't only a teenage problem. Many people have acne into adulthood or develop it for the first time later, and adult acne often shows up on the lower face, jawline and chin.

  • Blackheads

Open clogged pores that look dark at the surface.

  • Whiteheads

Closed clogged pores that sit as small flesh-colored or white bumps.

  • Papules and pustules

Red, tender bumps, sometimes with a white or yellow center.

  • Nodules and cysts

Deep, painful lumps under the skin that are more likely to scar.

Deep, painful cysts are usually hormonal or more severe acne. See hormonal and cystic acne.

What causes it

Usually several things at once.

Four things work together to produce acne: too much oil, dead skin cells that don't shed properly, acne bacteria, and inflammation. Treatment works best when it addresses more than one of them.

Common triggers that can make breakouts worse include:

  • Hormone changes around periods, pregnancy, starting or stopping birth control, and perimenopause.
  • Pore-clogging products in skincare, makeup, sunscreen or hair products.
  • Friction and pressure from phones, masks, helmets and tight clothing.
  • Stress and poor sleep, which can increase oil production and inflammation.
  • Some medications, including certain steroids and hormonal treatments.
  • Family history, since acne tends to run in families.

What to expect at Skin Space

From your first visit in Massapequa to clearer skin.

  1. Consultation

We look at your skin, ask about your breakouts, products, medications and cycle, and check for anything that needs a doctor first.

  2. Your plan

Your provider recommends in-spa treatments and a home routine, explains the timeline, and checks that each option suits your skin type and tone.

  3. Treatment and check-ins

You come back to Skin Space every few weeks so we can treat, see how your skin is responding, and adjust products and treatments.

  4. Maintenance

Once breakouts are under control, visits space out and the focus shifts to keeping skin clear and fading any leftover marks.

Caring for acne-prone skin at home

What you do between visits matters as much as the visits.

  • Cleanse gently twice a day. Scrubbing and harsh cleansers can inflame breakouts rather than clear them.
  • Check your products. Look for non-comedogenic skincare, makeup and sunscreen, and bring your products to your consultation.
  • Don't pick or squeeze. It prolongs inflammation and makes dark marks and scars more likely.
  • Wear sunscreen daily. Sun makes post-acne marks darker and slower to fade.
  • Plan for Long Island summers. Heat, humidity and beach days mean more sweat and oil. Rinse or cleanse after workouts and swimming, and switch to a lighter, oil-free sunscreen.
  • Be consistent. New routines take several weeks to show results, so give them time before switching.

When to see a dermatologist

Some acne needs medical treatment first.

In-spa treatment works well for many people with acne, but see a dermatologist or your doctor if you have:

  • Deep, painful nodules or cysts
  • Breakouts that are leaving scars
  • Sudden, severe acne in adulthood
  • Acne alongside irregular periods or new hair growth on the face or body, which can point to a hormonal cause
  • No improvement after a few months of consistent care

Prescription treatment and spa care often work well together. The Skin Space team is glad to coordinate with your dermatologist, and we'll refer you if we think you need medical care first.

Common questions

Is it normal to get acne as an adult?

Yes. Acne often continues past the teen years or starts for the first time in your 20s, 30s or 40s, and it is especially common in women. Adult acne tends to appear on the lower face and jawline.

How long does it take to see results?

Most people see a change within the first several weeks, with clearer skin building over two to four months. Acne develops under the skin for weeks before it surfaces, so steady treatment and home care matter more than any single appointment.

Can I have treatments while taking prescription acne medication?

Sometimes, but tell us about every medication first. Some prescriptions, especially oral isotretinoin and strong topical retinoids, make skin more fragile, and certain treatments need to wait until you have stopped them for a period set by your prescriber.

Will a single facial clear my acne?

A facial can calm and clear congestion, but active acne usually needs a series of treatments combined with the right home care. That is why we usually recommend a structured plan rather than a one-off visit.

Does diet cause acne?

Diet is not the main cause, but some research links high-sugar, high-glycemic foods and, for some people, dairy to more breakouts. If you notice a pattern, it is worth discussing, but food changes alone rarely clear acne.

Where can I get acne treatment near Massapequa?

Skin Space is a med spa in Massapequa, NY, and many of our acne clients come from nearby towns across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Every plan starts with an in-person consultation so we can see your skin and recommend the right treatments.

Does Skin Space treat teen acne?

Yes. Skin Space offers teen facials and the Face Reality Acne Bootcamp for teens, and a parent or guardian is welcome at the consultation. Deep, painful or scarring breakouts may also need a dermatologist, and we'll say so if they do.

Should I pop my pimples?

Try not to. Squeezing can push bacteria deeper, prolong inflammation and increase the chance of dark marks and scarring. Professional extractions are done with sterile tools and the right technique.
