What under-eye bags are
Puffiness and bags look alike but behave differently.
Under-eye puffiness is usually fluid that collects in the thin skin under the eyes. It's often worst in the morning, after salty food or alcohol, or during allergy season, and it improves as the day goes on. This kind of swelling responds well to cooling, drainage and circulation-boosting treatments.
True under-eye bags are different. With age, the fat that cushions the eye can push forward as the tissues holding it in place weaken, creating fullness that stays all day. In-spa treatments can soften how bags look, but they can't remove that fat. When bags are significant and permanent, a consultation with an eyelid surgeon is often the right next step, and we'll say so.
Morning puffiness
Swelling that's worst when you wake up and settles during the day.
Fluid-related puffiness
Swelling after salty food, alcohol, crying, poor sleep or allergies.
Permanent bags
Fullness from fat that has shifted forward, visible all day and often with a groove below it.
A shadow or groove below the bag is covered in hollow tear troughs, and darkness under the eyes in dark circles. For the overall worn-out look, see tired-looking eyes.
What causes it
Fluid, lifestyle and the way the eye area ages.
Puffiness and bags have different causes, though many people have both.
- Fluid retention, especially overnight and after salty meals or alcohol.
- Allergies and sinus congestion, which cause swelling and rubbing around the eyes.
- Poor sleep or crying, both of which lead to temporary swelling.
- Aging, as the tissue holding the fat under the eyes weakens and the fat moves forward.
- Genetics, since prominent under-eye bags often run in families, even at a young age.
- Hormone changes, including around your menstrual cycle, which can increase fluid retention.

From your first visit in Massapequa to fresher-looking eyes.
Assessment
We look at your under-eyes at different times and angles and ask when puffiness is worst, to tell fluid apart from permanent bags.
Your plan
For puffiness, your provider recommends de-puffing treatments and home habits. For permanent bags, we'll talk through what in-spa care can and can't do.
Treatment
De-puffing treatments show results right away and are relaxing, with no downtime.
Maintenance
Many clients book regular facials, especially before events, to keep puffiness down.
Reducing puffiness at home
Small daily habits make a visible difference.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised so fluid doesn't pool under your eyes overnight.
- Cut back on salt and alcohol, especially in the evening.
- Use a cold compress or chilled eye patches for a few minutes in the morning.
- Treat allergies and avoid rubbing your eyes.
- Stay hydrated. Well-hydrated skin holds less excess fluid.
- Plan for Long Island allergy seasons. Spring pollen and fall ragweed can make eyes puffier, so start allergy care early in the season.
When to check with your doctor
Most puffiness is harmless, but some swelling isn't.
Check with your doctor if you notice:
- Swelling around only one eye, or swelling that's red, warm or painful
- Puffiness with swelling in your legs or ankles, unusual tiredness or weight gain
- Bulging eyes, or puffiness with dry, gritty or irritated eyes
- Persistent swelling that doesn't improve during the day
- Significant permanent bags you'd like to discuss with an eyelid surgeon
Get emergency care right away for sudden swelling of the eyes, lips, face or throat, or any trouble breathing. Every Skin Space consultation includes a review of your health history so we can choose treatments that are safe for you.
Common questions
Why are my eyes puffier in the morning?
Fluid collects under the eyes while you lie flat overnight. It usually drains during the day once you're upright.
Can treatment get rid of under-eye bags?
In-spa treatments can reduce puffiness and soften how bags look. Permanent bags caused by fat moving forward usually need eyelid surgery to remove.
Does filler help under-eye bags?
Sometimes. Filler can smooth the groove below a mild bag so it looks softer, but it isn't recommended when puffiness or fluid is the main problem, since it can make swelling worse.
How long do de-puffing results last?
Results from cooling and drainage treatments are temporary, usually lasting from several hours to a few days. Regular treatments and home habits help keep puffiness down.
Can young people have eye bags?
Yes. Prominent under-eye bags can be inherited and show up in your 20s, even without other signs of aging.
