Always follow the aftercare instructions from the provider who performed your treatment. Recovery treatments are timed to your procedure, and some need to wait until skin has fully healed. If you notice signs of a complication, contact your provider right away.
Why recovery care matters
Healing is part of the treatment.
Many aesthetic treatments work by creating controlled injury so the skin rebuilds. Microneedling, laser resurfacing and peels all leave skin temporarily red, tight, dry or peeling, and that healing phase is when new collagen forms. How you care for skin during this time affects comfort, the risk of complications and the final result.
Good recovery care is mostly gentle: protecting the skin, keeping it hydrated, avoiding heat and sun, and letting it heal without picking or rushing. Once your provider says it's safe, calming in-spa treatments like LED can help reduce redness and support repair.
Resurfacing and peels
Redness, tightness and peeling for several days; sun protection is essential.
Microneedling
Redness and dryness for one to three days, with gentle care and no actives.
Injectables
Mild swelling or bruising for a few days; avoid pressing, massaging or heat unless told otherwise.
If your skin feels raw or stings after over-exfoliating, see compromised skin barrier. For skin that reacts easily, see sensitive and reactive skin.
What slows healing
Common mistakes after treatment.
Most recovery problems come from doing too much, too soon.
- Sun exposure, which can cause dark patches on healing skin.
- Restarting retinoids and acids too early, before skin has fully recovered.
- Picking or peeling flaking skin, which can lead to marks or scarring.
- Heat, sweat and workouts in the first day or two, which increase redness and swelling.
- Makeup on freshly treated skin, before your provider says it's safe.
- Skipping aftercare products or swapping in products that weren't recommended.

When to contact your provider
Some signs need attention right away.
Contact the provider who treated you right away if you notice:
- Increasing pain, swelling, warmth or pus, which can mean infection
- Blisters, crusting or open sores, including cold sores after laser or peels
- After filler, skin that turns pale, white, blotchy purple or dusky, or severe pain at or near the treatment area
- Dark or light patches developing as skin heals
- Redness or swelling that gets worse instead of better after a few days

Common questions
How long does recovery take after microneedling?
Most people have redness for one to three days. Skin may feel dry or tight for a few more days as it heals.
When can I wear makeup after a treatment?
It depends on the treatment. After microneedling it's usually 24 hours, after resurfacing it can be longer. Follow your provider's advice.
When can I restart my retinol?
Usually once skin has stopped peeling and no longer stings, often about a week after stronger treatments. Your provider will tell you when.
Can LED help after a treatment?
Yes. LED is gentle and can help calm redness and support healing when used at the right time after a treatment.
What's normal and what isn't after filler?
Mild swelling and bruising are normal. Skin turning pale, white or dusky, or severe pain, is not, and needs immediate attention from your provider.
